ORIGIN STORY
For the past few years, I’ve been sitting with one question I can’t shake: why do we struggle so much to truly connect with ourselves and with each other? And I’ve decided to write about it.
My Why.
So many of us have grown used to disconnection; to treating one another and ourselves with very little consideration or care. It genuinely saddens me how careless we can be with each other, and how much of that we’ve normalized.
And in my work and in my life, I keep seeing the same pattern - people longing for connection, while participating in relational dynamics that undermine.
We want closeness, but we abandon ourselves to get it.
We want connection, but our wounds push people away.
This book is my attempt to name what many are struggling with and offer a path to healing.
I believe we’re meant for something better, higher. That we can meet each other with more humanity, dignity, and care, if we’re willing to look honestly at what’s getting in the way.
What’s it about?
What We Owe Each Other is about the deeper roots of disconnection, why we struggle to relate well to others and to ourselves. It weaves together social science, personal stories, and practical insight to help us recognize what disconnects us and how we begin the work of repair.
Some of what I explore in this book:
• How identity shapes our relationships
• The cost of self-abandonment
• Why relational dignity is both the crisis and the cure
• How we begin healing ourselves, our relationships, and our communities
I believe many of the challenges we see in our workplaces, families, and communities are, at their core, relational fractures and people carrying wounds they haven’t yet learned how to heal. If we want better workplaces, relationships, families, and friendships, the work starts within and moves outward.
Why Substackers Only!
I’ve reached a point in the writing process where I don’t want to do this alone. So I’m inviting a small group of avid readers to read an early excerpt (the introduction and first chapter) and share honest reflections.
I’m calling this group The Witness Circle. There’s something vulnerable and special about letting people read your work before it’s finished and having people witness you in process, in rough draft.
That’s why I’m being intentional about who I invite into this stage (not because it needs to be exclusive, but because I want it to be thoughtful and meaningful.)
This is for you if:
• You care deeply about relationships and human behavior
• You’ve felt the tension between wanting connection and struggling to sustain it
• You’re open to reflecting honestly on what you read, and on yourself
• You want to be part of something before it’s fully formed
What you’ll receive:
• Early access to the introduction and a chapter
• A chance to shape the clarity and direction of the book
• Acknowledgment in the final published version
If something in you feels curious, pulled, or even slightly stirred reading this, you may be a great fit.
Email admin@highergoundproject.org to express interest. I’ll send you more details. I’ll be selecting the small group over the next few weeks.
In the meantime…
I’m currently in Thailand working on this book, between hanging out with the elephants, of course. Getting an elephant hug may be top tier happiness for me. If anyone wants to talk Thailand or elephants, you know where to find me!
SAWASDEE KA!!!!! 🙏
